Buddhist Lent Begins — Chol Vossa 2026
Chol Vossa marks the beginning of Buddhist Lent, the three-month monastic retreat that runs from late July through to late October. The practice comes from a rule the Buddha established to stop monks from travelling during the monsoon season, when they might inadvertently crush insects and crop shoots underfoot. For the full three months, monks must remain within their temple compounds: they do not walk their morning alms routes through the streets. On the day Chol Vossa begins, laypeople bring food and offerings directly to temples rather than meeting monks in the street. The ceremony at Siem Reap's wats starts before dawn: chanting, candlelight, the presentation of food and robes to monks, families arriving in formal dress. The most accessible pagodas for visitors are Wat Preah Prom Rath, on the river near the Old Market, and Wat Bo, in the residential neighborhood east of Pub Street. What to expect: you will not see monks walking for alms during this period, a noticeable absence if you know to look for it. The spiritual life of the city moves inside temple walls. July is peak monsoon: rain arrives daily in the mid-afternoon. Go to temples early. The Angkor complex remains fully open and is actually quieter than the peak dry-season months.
Angkor Wat Autumn Equinox
At the autumn equinox, the sun rises in perfect alignment with Angkor Wat's central tower, creating a golden column of light. Crowds gather before dawn for the phenomenon, which lasts only a few minutes.
Constitution Day 2026
Cambodia's Constitution Day marks the promulgation of the 1993 constitution on September 24 - the legal foundation of the modern Kingdom of Cambodia. The document was signed after UNTAC-supervised elections brought two decades of civil war to a formal close, restoring constitutional monarchy under Norodom Sihanouk and embedding democratic rights in law for the first time since the Khmer Rouge erased the previous constitutional order. For Western visitors, the day is quiet rather than spectacular: government offices close, schools shut, and official ceremonies take place in Phnom Penh. In Siem Reap, Angkor Wat sees slightly fewer visitors than usual. A good morning to visit the temples early and reflect on the distance between the civilization that built them and the near-total destruction Cambodia survived in the late twentieth century - and how deliberately this small country rebuilt itself.
Pchum Ben (Ancestors Festival) 2026
Pchum Ben is one of Cambodia's most important religious holidays - fifteen days of ancestor veneration culminating in Pchum Ben Day, when Cambodians believe the gates of the underworld open and the spirits of the dead seek offerings from their living descendants. Families visit their home wat (Buddhist temple) at dawn each day of the festival, offering bay ben - small balls of sticky rice, sesame, and coconut - to monks who chant prayers and transfer merit to the spirits. The final three days are the most intense: Phum Ben, Kaen Ben, and Pchum Ben itself. Cities empty as Cambodians travel home to their home provinces and villages. Siem Reap's temples fill with incense smoke and orange-robed monks; the surrounding villages return to their oldest rhythms. For tourists, Pchum Ben offers one of the most visually compelling cultural encounters in Southeast Asia - arrive at a local wat before 6 a.m. to watch families bring offerings in the pale light. Some restaurants and guesthouses operate reduced hours; the city slows noticeably. Dress modestly at all temple visits: no shorts, no sleeveless tops. The holiday lasts 3 days officially but the full 15-day observance shapes the city's mood throughout.

Commemoration Day of King's Father 2026
October 15 marks the anniversary of the death of King Norodom Sihanouk, who died in Beijing on this date in 2012 at the age of 89. The day honors Cambodia's most consequential modern figure - the man who negotiated independence from France in 1953, steered the country through Cold War entanglements, survived the Khmer Rouge period in exile, and returned to help broker the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements that ended the civil war. Cambodians call him Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk Varman, Father of the Nation. His ashes rest in a golden stupa at the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. In Siem Reap, the day is marked with quiet respect: government offices close, many locals visit the nearest wat to offer prayers. Angkor remains open. The temples of Angkor were the symbol Sihanouk spent decades advocating for at UNESCO - a reminder that the sites you are visiting survived in part because of his determined diplomacy.
Paris Peace Agreements Day 2026
October 23 marks the signing of the Paris Peace Agreements in 1991 - the accords that formally ended Cambodia's civil war after two decades of conflict spanning Lon Nol's coup, Pol Pot's genocide, the Vietnamese occupation, and years of UN-brokered diplomacy. Eighteen nations signed the agreement, establishing the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) and setting the path for the 1993 elections that restored constitutional democracy. Cambodia removed the date from its official public holiday calendar in 2019 when public holidays were reduced from 28 to 22 days, but the day retains deep historical meaning. The 1991 settlement was the mechanism that allowed Cambodia to rejoin the international community - and without it, the tourism industry in Siem Reap that you are part of today would not exist in its current form. Government offices and businesses operate normally. Angkor is open.
King's Coronation Day 2026
October 29 marks the anniversary of the coronation of King Norodom Sihamoni at the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh in 2004. Cambodia's current monarch was crowned following the abdication of his father, Norodom Sihanouk, who stepped down citing poor health. Sihamoni was Cambodia's Ambassador to UNESCO in Paris at the time and was chosen by the Royal Council of the Throne. He had been trained as a classical Khmer dancer and musician in Prague and Paris, and brought a quiet, arts-centered dignity to the role that stands in contrast to the turbulence of his father's era. He rules as a constitutional monarch with largely ceremonial powers. National Day celebrations feature royal palace events in Phnom Penh and flag displays across the country. In Siem Reap, the Cambodian flag - uniquely among national flags for depicting a building, Angkor Wat - flies from government buildings and many businesses. The city marks the day with official gatherings at the provincial level; Angkor remains open and is particularly atmospheric at sunset on public holidays when local families visit.
Global Crystal Bowl Symposium 4
International gathering of crystal bowl practitioners, therapists, musicians, and enthusiasts. 7-night all-inclusive package at the 5-star TUI BLUE Angkor Grace resort. Program includes three Emerald Presentations, four Sapphire Workshops, Q&A panel, and a live-streamed concert.
Cambodia Independence Day Celebration 2026
Cambodia celebrates its independence from France on November 9, marking the date in 1953 when King Norodom Sihanouk formally proclaimed independence after a determined diplomatic campaign that included a self-imposed royal exile designed to force the issue with Paris. France had controlled Cambodia as a protectorate since 1863. Independence Day is a major national holiday: government offices, schools, and many businesses close, and there are official parades and ceremonies throughout the country. In Phnom Penh, celebrations center on the Independence Monument and the Royal Palace. In Siem Reap, public buildings and many businesses fly the Cambodian flag - a dark red field with an image of Angkor Wat at its center, the only national flag in the world to feature a building. Fireworks are often set off in the evening. The day is worth pausing over: the Angkor temples you are visiting were the symbolic heart of a kingdom that fought, diplomatically, for the right to keep them as its own.
Water Festival (Bon Om Touk) - Day 1
Cambodia celebrates the reversal of the Tonle Sap River flow, marking the end of the rainy season. Watch boat races on the Siem Reap River, enjoy cultural performances, street festivities, and evening illuminations. Food stalls line the riverbanks. Public holiday.
Water Festival (Bon Om Touk) - Day 2
Day two of the Water Festival continues with boat races, traditional performances, and street celebrations along the Siem Reap River. Evening illuminations light up the water as thousands gather to celebrate this ancient tradition. Public holiday.
Water Festival (Bon Om Touk) - Day 3
The final day of the Water Festival culminates with closing ceremonies and full moon celebrations. Locals release decorated banana-leaf boats with candles onto the river to pay respect to the water spirits. Fireworks and lanterns over the riverfront. Public holiday.

Peace Day 2026
Cambodia's Peace Day honors the country's long road from conflict to stability - one of the most remarkable recoveries in modern history. Within the span of a single generation, Cambodia survived Lon Nol's 1970 coup, five years of the Khmer Rouge's systematic genocide that killed roughly two million people, a decade of Vietnamese occupation and civil war, and the UN transitional period. The country that emerged from the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements and the 1993 elections had lost an entire generation of teachers, doctors, engineers, and artists. What has been rebuilt since is extraordinary: a functioning democracy, a growing economy, and a tourism industry anchored by the temples of Angkor - buildings that the Khmer Rouge were still fighting around when many of today's visitors to Siem Reap were born. Peace Day is observed quietly: official ceremonies at the provincial level, flag displays, and moments of reflection. In Siem Reap, the most fitting observation is a visit to the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) archives in Phnom Penh, or a conversation with any local over the age of 60. The temples are open.
